IVSA India X Manali Strays
10 Days Internship Program
IVSA India proudly collaborates with Manali Strays, a dedicated animal welfare NGO located in the serene Himalayan landscape of Haripur village, Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by snow-covered peaks and a peaceful natural environment, Manali Strays serves as a vital centre for rescue, treatment, and rehabilitation of animals in the region.
As part of this collaboration, IVSA India has sent 11 batches of 6 - 7 veterinary students each from across the country to participate in a 10-day intensive internship program running from August to November this year. This program is designed to provide students with real-world clinical exposure, hands-on learning, and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to community animal health.
During the internship, students gain extensive experience in small-animal surgeries, including neutering, spaying, amputations, TVT management, colpopexy procedures, and tumour removal surgeries. They actively participate in OPD operations, assisting in diagnosis, case management, and decision-making under the guidance of experienced veterinarians.
The interns are also trained in pre-operative and post-operative care, ensuring they understand complete patient management from preparation to recovery. They work closely with the shelter team in feeding, medication administration, and wound care, including the management of maggot wounds and chronic healing cases.
Students further enhance their diagnostic skills through X-ray interpretation, especially fracture identification, and conducting laboratory tests relevant to routine and emergency cases. The program also emphasizes animal handling techniques, ensuring safe, stress-free interaction with dogs and other rescued animals.
Beyond clinical skills, the internship focuses on the broader aspects of rescue and rehabilitation, allowing students to understand the challenges of fieldwork, community interactions, and long-term animal care. Through this immersive experience, IVSA India aims to build compassionate, skilled, and socially responsible veterinarians.
This partnership not only strengthens student training but also supports Manali Strays in its mission to improve the lives of stray and injured animals in the Himalayan region.
